The experience

Compact on the outside the Panda is much larger than life on the inside. In fact it’s the only supermini on the market you could really call substantial when it comes to space and storage. There’s lots of headroom and Fiat’s clever design means there’s easily enough room for four. There’s an ample 206 litres of boot spaces, spreading to 236 litres with the seats forward. Great fun to drive, the Panda’s high torque means less gear changing: opt for Dualogic system and you can change gear without even touching the clutch pedal. The ultimate city car: all Panda’s are fitted with Dualdrive electric power steering.

The performance

There’s a range of oil burners stretching from the entry level 1.1 hatch that gives a meaty 39 miles to the gallon, to the 1.4 16V 100bhp, capable of 0 – 60 in under ten seconds. King of the crop however is the 1.3 16V Multijet engine. Award winning and internationally celebrated, it walked away with best engine at the Fleet World Awards and was named winner in the 1.0 – 1.4 category by the International Engine of the Year jury. It’s one of the most economical and powerful compact engines around, achieving 65.7mpg and 0 – 60 in 13 seconds.

The technology

It goes without saying that a car designed for urban driving has to be safe and secure. Driver and passenger airbags are thrown in, with up to six available. Every Panda comes with ABS anti-lock brakes and EBD fitted as standard; ESP, understeer/oversteer monitors and ASR (anti slip regulator) can be added as an extra boost to safety. An MP3 CD player is fitted on all Dynamic and Eleganza models, with a bassy sub-woofer as an optional extra.
